A bespoke auction house in Chicago is looking for a Department Lead for their Fine Books & Manuscripts category. Reporting to the company President, the Department Lead plays a pivotal role in advancing the company’s Book Department. The primary focus of this position is to drive growth by expertly cataloging auction inventory, securing new consignments for future book auctions, and effectively managing one direct report. A minimum of five-years of professional experience required in selling Fine and Rare Books at auction, or a minimum of seven-years in a similar retail operation, demonstrating a deep understanding of the industry and market dynamics. Alternatively, a minimum of five-years of academic experience related to cataloging Fine and Rare Books, showcasing expertise in research, cataloging standards, and archival practices would also be welcome. Ideally, the successful candidate will have a contagious passion for their area of expertise bringing with them an existing network of clients.

Responsibilities
  • Strategic Growth: Synthesize and execute strategic development initiatives to further scale the Fine Books Department, contributing to the company’s overall growth trajectory.

  • Marketing and Promotion: Identify innovative advertising and marketing strategies to promote upcoming sales, leveraging various channels and platforms to reach a wider audience of collectors and enthusiasts.

  • Logistics and Operations: Collaborate with the Operations Team to plan and execute inbound shipments of inventory for auction, ensuring seamless logistics and inventory management processes.

  • Catalog Quality Assurance: Aid the Photography and Graphic Design Department to ensure online and physical auction catalogs are completed to company standards, enhancing the presentation and appeal of auction items.

  • Financial Management: Work with the Finance Team to develop a department budget, monitor department finances, and optimize financial performance in alignment with strategic goals.

  • Client Engagement: Expand the auction house’s client network through direct and indirect strategies, fostering strong relationships with new and existing consignors, bidders, and industry stakeholders.

  • In-Person Networking: Be able to attend trade conventions and other in person events as needed, representing the company and engaging with clients to secure new business opportunities and bolster the company’s network.

  • Sale Operations: Proactively contribute to pre- and post-sale operations, offering insights and support to enhance overall efficiency and effectiveness, assisting with live auctions as assigned.

Requirements
  • Minimum of five years of professional experience in selling Fine and Rare Books at auction or a minimum of seven years in a similar retail operation, demonstrating a deep understanding of the industry and market dynamics.

  • Alternatively, a minimum of five years of academic experience related to cataloging Fine and Rare Books, showcasing expertise in research, cataloging standards, and archival practices.

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a related field such as Library Sciences, Art History, or Business Administration.
