OnAim Conservation is looking for a sculpture conservation assistant to join our team. The position will focus on a variety of sculptures, objects, and artifacts with a mix of indoor and outdoor work. The ideal candidate shows initiative, is comfortable working outdoors and in a shop environment, has an interest in materials, and an eye for detail.

The candidate will have the opportunity to work on a range of objects and materials, and will have a unique opportunity to further treatment skills and knowledge. They will gain experience with a wide variety of artist materials and techniques, condition issues, and treatments. They will learn a range of skills associated with outdoor art such as patina, application of industrial paint systems and other coatings, as well as how to undertake structural repairs of a range of materials. The candidate may be asked to participate in preparation and research for large-scale projects, as well as documentation, photography, and condition reporting, and collaborate with a range of specialists, such as welders and industrial painters.

Candidates should have an understanding of art history and the ethics of conservation. Knowledge of outdoor sculptures and public art is a plus. Our projects routinely involve and are informed by interactions with artists, artist studios and foundations, and for a diverse group of stakeholders which include major museums, galleries, corporate, public and private collections in and around Houston, Texas.

  • Carry out a range of treatments to the highest professional standards and in accordance with the AIC Code of Ethics.

  • Produce thorough and accurate documentation and photo documentation. This may include on-site condition reporting.

  • Conduct preventive conservation treatments for various collections

  • Research into artists and materials

Requirements

Requirements

  • Experience with handling and treatment of artworks.

  • Documentation and organization skills.

  • Possess a wide range of hand skills and the ability to perform physical tasks both in an indoor and outdoor setting.

  • Has an understanding of shop and job site etiquette. Spacial awareness of surroundings, especially when working on site, is important.

  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and stand for long periods of time while working in an open studio environment or outdoors and sometimes work on elevated equipment.

  • Occasional travel and overnight stays may be required.

How to Apply

Pay commensurate with experience and abilities.

Starting pay is $15-$20hr based on experience.
